Americans are getting old

In a ‘pay as you go’ plan, benefits paid (to retired Americans), are paid for by working Americans. Demographic shifts – the aging of the baby boom generation, and relatively ‘skinny’ generations since – mean that the average age of our society is increasing sharply.

There are declining numbers of working age Americans to pay for for each American over 70 who is drawing Social Security and Medicare benefit.
